About getting treatment from Optimal Digestion Clinic
What is Naturopathy?
Head to the About page to learn what Naturopathy is and why you would see a Naturopath.
Will I have to make changes to my diet and lifestyle?
Yes. Depending on what is happening with your health and what your goals are you may or may not have to go on a temporary, semi-restrictive diet, or perhaps we will just need to make a few healthy dietary changes. Perhaps we will need to increase your natural movement or make changes to how you approach sleep. There are plenty of changes that could be discussed here but, in the end, we work with where you are at, and the pace and intensity with which we move orward is directed by you.
Will I have to take foul-tasting herbs?
It’s more than likely that you will need to take herbal tinctures as they are your best allies in the journey to being the best you can be and dealing with many digestive complaints. There are herbs, like licorice, that can be added to reduce the severity of the taste, but ultimately, herbs often become more palatable day by day anyway. In some instances, we can possibly use capsules, tablets, powders or possibly tea blends. There is a wide variety of practitioner-grade herbal and nutritional supplements that we can utilise if need be.
How long will it take to feel better?
As everyone and their circumstances are unique this is a case-by-case basis and can vary considerably. There are no set timelines with complementary and alternative medicines. Some patients may feel positive changes within weeks while others may take months, especially if their symptoms have been long-standing.
Can I use my GP blood test results?
Absolutely! I encourage you to bring any recent bloodwork to your appointment, and I’ll interpret your results through a functional medicine lens—which often looks at optimal ranges rather than just “normal” levels.
About Consultations
Do you offer in-person consultations?
Yes, I do currently offer in-person consultations at Brunswick River Herbals in Brunswick Heads and at Mullumbimby Herbals in Mullumbimby (NSW, Australia). Please contact me directly here to arrange an in-person consultation.
Are Naturopathic consultations covered by Medicare or Private Health Insurance?
Naturopathic consultations are not covered by Medicare and as of April 2019 Health Fund rebates for Naturopathic consultations are no longer available. However, stay tuned as there are people in the industry as well as our associations working toward having this decision overturned and it’s looking positive.
Do you see patients outside of Australia?
Unfortunately, at this stage I am only seeing patients who live in Australia. In the near future, I intend on branching out to offer support to people in other countries. Stay tuned!
What can I expect in an initial consultation?
The initial consultation is for one hour and includes an overview and exploration of your main presenting health concerns as well as detailed questioning regarding your digestive system and bowel habits, stress levels and sleep habits, diet and lifestyle habits, and other factors that are unique to you and your history.
There will be a review of any recent pathology (or other) tests, and recommendations made for possible further pathology or other relevant testing deemed necessary. This will be discussed with you.
After the consultation (usually within 48 hours) you will receive a detailed prescription and healthcare plan outlining any herbal or supplement prescriptions, any diet and lifestyle recommendations, any relevant questionnaires to complete, and any referrals or testing needed.
How many consults will I need?
As everyone and their circumstances are unique this is a case-by-case basis.
Generally, after the initial one-hour consultation, I like to see my patient for a follow-up one-hour consultation 2-4 weeks later to review any testing that was ordered, discuss how treatment is progressing and to see how symptoms may have changed, and redirect treatment if necessary.
From here we have active treatment follow-ups for 30-45 minutes every 2-4 weeks. As your symptoms improve, we will see each other less frequently and appointments will be further apart.
For some patients it may be that they only need a couple of consultations to achieve their desired outcome while for others there may be more layers to work with or their ability to adhere to recommendations may influence the length of treatment.
Do I need to spend thousands of dollars on testing and supplements?
My patients’ dollar is at the forefront of my mind and I will always work within your financial limitations. No test or supplement will be prescribed with the intent of getting you to spend money and I will always explain precisely why I would like to prescribe any test or treatment.
Tests may occasionally seem to be expensive but can ultimately end up saving you a lot of money in pointless treatments by providing us with valuable information that helps get to the root cause of what is going.
What testing do you use?
Testing is always tailored to the individual and their circumstances. No unnecessary testing is prescribed, and it will be explained to you precisely why a particular test is recommended.
I utilise functional gut testing to assess microbiome health and to identify the possible root causes and imbalances responsible for bloating, constipation, diarrhoea, reflux, and abdominal pain among many others.
If clinically indicated, I may recommend:
- Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) breath testing
- Functional microbiome testing (e.g. Microba Microbiome Explorer, NutriPATH Complete Microbiome Mapping)
- Organic Acids Test
- Standard blood tests – May require a referral to a GP depending on test(s) required.
