About Optimal Digestion Clinic

Who I am

Hi there, I’m Matthew, owner of Optimal Digestion Clinic. I am a degree-qualified naturopath based in the Northern Rivers of NSW Australia, with a special interest in gastrointestinal health. Much like you perhaps, I am a person with a long history of various gastrointestinal complaints. Knowing firsthand how life-altering digestive complaints can be, I decided early on that this was the area of health I wanted to dedicate my work and research to.

As a lifelong student and a lover of learning, I spend much of my free time exploring scientific evidence and researching all things health and gut related. I am fascinated by the human body and all its intricacies as well as by how herbal medicine and nutritional therapies can be game changers in the path back to optimal digestion. I also love to help people be the best they can be, be their healthiest, and to help them live free of any gastrointestinal symptoms.

In 2012 I completed a Bachelor of Health Science Naturopathy degree from the Southern School of Natural Therapies in Melbourne, VIC. This 4-year fulltime degree comprised sciences, clinical nutrition, and Western Herbal Medicine, amongst so much more. As a qualified naturopath I am an active member of the Naturopaths and Herbalists Association of Australia (NHAA).

As well as Optimal Digestion Clinic, I work as part of a professional team of naturopaths in Mullumbimby, NSW Australia. It is a fantastic place that has taught me to think fast and deal with a variety of acute conditions. As a team we bounce ideas and learn from each other with each of us having a different area of interest.  It is a nice balance of traditional medicine and the latest scientific research.

What I do

In clinic I work with my patients to resolve their digestive complaints and optimise their overall health. As a naturopath I take an individualised approach to treat the whole person and do not necessarily treat a condition or patient with protocols. Multiple people can have the same diagnosis but, as we are all individuals, there are a multitude of contributing factors that can influence how each of these people experiences and presents with this condition. Getting better is not about protocols or long-term extreme diets.

When working with a patient I take a detailed case history and, when necessary, utilise comprehensive functional pathology testing to identify the root cause and underlying factors that are contributing to your symptoms. I then determine the best course of treatment, utilising herbal medicine, nutritional therapies, and lifestyle medicine to support your ongoing health.

It is so rewarding to help a person navigate a path to resolution and getting them back to their symptoms not controlling their lives.

What is Naturopathy?

Naturopathy (or Naturopathic medicine) is a distinct form of healthcare grounded in strong philosophy that emphasises prevention of disease and the process of self-healing through the use of natural therapies. It blends modern science with traditional wisdom to assess and treat the whole person, taking into consideration the physical, mental, and emotional aspects of the individual.

Therapies used to stimulate the body’s own natural ability to heal itself include dietary interventions, nutritional supplementation, herbal medicine, and lifestyle counselling amongst others. These tools help to address deficiencies, treat disease processes, and promote overall health with benefits including optimised digestive function, increased energy, enhanced immune function, and improved general well-being.

A focus is put on identifying and addressing the underlying and root causes of disease while restoring balance and educating and empowering you to take control of your health in a sustainable way.

If you are struggling with gut health challenges and are tired of not finding answers, you don’t need to figure this all out by yourself.
